Udyam (MSME) Registration
Free government recognition as a micro, small or medium enterprise — and the credit, tender and delayed-payment protections that come with it.
What this is
Udyam registration is the government's recognition of a business as a micro, small or medium enterprise. It is filed online against your Aadhaar and PAN, is issued immediately in most cases, and carries no government fee.
What it unlocks is substantial: priority sector lending, collateral-free credit under the CGTMSE scheme, preference in public procurement, subsidies on patent and trademark filing, and — most usefully in practice — the statutory protection against delayed payment, under which a buyer who does not pay an MSME within the prescribed period owes compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate.
Classification is by investment in plant and machinery and by turnover, and the certificate is updated automatically from your ITR and GST data.

Who can apply
Any business — proprietorship, partnership, LLP, company, trust or society — engaged in manufacturing or services may register, provided it stays within the investment and turnover limits for the medium category.
A business needs an Aadhaar (of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised signatory) and a PAN. GST registration is required where the business is liable to be registered under GST.

What happens if you do not do this
There is no penalty for not registering — Udyam is a benefit, not an obligation. The cost of not registering is the benefits foregone, of which the delayed-payment protection is usually the most valuable.
Misrepresenting the classification to obtain benefits is an offence.
What comes after
The registration does not expire and needs no renewal. Investment and turnover figures update automatically from your income tax and GST returns, and the classification may move between categories as a result.
We add the registration to your entity record so it is available whenever a bank or a tender asks for it.
Questions people actually ask
Is there a government fee for Udyam registration?
No. Udyam registration is completely free on the government portal. Any amount you pay is a professional fee for having it done correctly, and you should be suspicious of anyone describing a "government fee" for it.
Does the Udyam certificate expire?
No. It is permanent and needs no renewal. The classification updates automatically from your ITR and GST data.
What is the delayed-payment protection worth?
A buyer who does not pay a registered MSME within forty-five days is liable to compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate. For a business with slow-paying corporate customers this is often the single strongest reason to register.
Can a trader register under Udyam?
Retail and wholesale trade were brought within Udyam registration for the limited purpose of priority sector lending. Traders can register, but not every MSME scheme is open to them.
Do I need GST registration to obtain Udyam?
Only if your business is liable to be registered under GST. A business below the GST threshold can register on Udyam without a GSTIN.
